Another inspirational golf story...

Tell Marty Turcios that you can't be perfect... and he asks, "Why not?" Obviously he knows how to avoid the quicksands of perfection.

"Changing My Mind" by Tom Ingalls

An honest and moving account of how a day on the links with Marty Turcios provided a transformative experience and an opportunity for one golfer to tear down a wall of indifference and fear that had taken a lifetime to build.

Askernish Old: My favorite course is one I have never played. by Steve Cohen

“Askernish Old” is the name used by a number of golf writers to describe a golf course designed in 1891 by Old Tom Morris on remote South Uist, an island in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides that was quite literally “lost in the sands of time” and rediscovered in 2005. It has since been restored and as far as I know is currently the only course on the island... unlike at St Andrews you will find no “Askernish New.”

Beware the Quicksands of Perfection by SIS Classics

Although the 150th anniversary of the Open is being celebrated on the venerable Old Course at St Andrews, it was Prestwick Golf Club,  located 120 miles to the west where the Open Championship was first held in 1860 (and for the first twelve Championships until 1872).  Prestwick eventually hosted 24 Opens with the last one taking place in 1925.

In the following article, first published on our website in 1997, SIS Historian Peter Shaerf  tells the interesting story of the last round of that 1925 Championship... and the effect that the constraints of space and the logistics of crowd control had on eliminating Prestwick from the Open rota, as well as the devastating consequences for runner-up Macdonald Smith —  a golfer upon whom Peter has dubbed the title of the “Greatest Player Never to Win a Major.”

Jo's GITK Challenge - Part One: Singing the Praises by Jo

It's not the warmth of the fire, nor Shivas' presence that warmed my spirit when I began this blog. It was numerous conversations which have taken place over the last six years. Each made me wonder why/how a book could affect so many.

Now... I have an answer.
