In an very amusing passage in Golf in the Kingdom, Shivas Irons, counsels us on the seemingly hopeless quest for self improvement. “Tae enjoy yersel’, tha’s the thing,” he said, “and beware the quicksands o’ perfection.” In this commentary Dave Korba reminds us that these “quicksands” can be particularly permeable in our pursuit of the perfect golf swing.

It was a clear November day, warmer than normal. The sun was bright, casting harsh shadows. My face was warm in the sun and my hands cool in the mild breeze. As I walked the course alone, I was drawn to the sight of a red flag shouting in the breeze.   The course was empty as I walked in a sea of green along the rolling contours and slopes of the changing landscape. The leaves were gone from the trees and the mountainside was a backdrop of dappled gray. There was something about that red flag…

I like to play golf as a way to escape from the daily grind. When played with a different perspective, golf can also teach us valuable lessons about how to live life more fully.

My coach calmly said to me, “Trust your swing.”  “Trust it to do what?” I thought.  The way I’m playing lately, I have little faith that my swing will take care of itself.  After all, I need be in control, right?

Make a full shoulder turn.  Release your wrists.  Throw the club head down the line toward the target.  Let Go!  These are some of the usual mechanics involved when building a solid swing.  A swing I can trust.  What other aspects of trust are involved in the game?
