Championing the Spirit of Golf!

Our Mission

The Shivas Irons Society is dedicated to furthering golf as a mindful pursuit and as a tool for personal growth and development. We inspire, connect and support all who are interested in exploring the transformational aspects of the game in the spirit of Michael Murphy’s 1972 novel “Golf In The Kingdom,” the original inspiration for the Society and one of the best selling and most influential golf books of all time. (Buy your own copy of "Golf in the Kingdom" here.)

Our supporters believe that golf is a better, more rewarding game when played in a way that’s intentionally conscious and respectful of its core roots and values – a style of play that Shivas Irons himself would recognize and endorse, and one that is often at odds with much of what the modern game has become.

Our programs provide opportunities to reconnect with the original spirit of the game and present golf as a life-long, mastery-based pursuit that’s ideally suited for personal development and creative expression, the positive benefits of which have little to do with a golfer’s score relative to par, their latest quick-fix swing thoughts, or the clubs they play with.

The Shivas Irons Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax-exempt organization. Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Our History

The Shivas Irons Society was founded at the 1992 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, where a group of like-minded individuals, inspired by Michael Murphy’s work “Golf in the Kingdom”, formed into a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to the personal-growth opportunities in the game of golf.

Since that time, the Society has offered writings, lectures and seminars on topics relating to walking this path of mastery; has offered golf events and gatherings in some of the most desirable locations on the planet; and has built an international community of supporters.

FAQ

Where and when did the Shivas Irons Society start and who founded it?

The Shivas Irons Society became an organization at the 1992 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. The Society was the brain-child of Steve Cohen who was a friend of Michael Murphy, author of Golf in the Kingdom. Steve Cohen realized that he was one of many people who love golf who was deeply touched by Murphy's book and that an organization founded on the principles that the book expounded upon could be a basis of a community that promoted and celebrated those principles as well as provide for fellowship, education and personal growth.

Why is the society called the Shivas Irons Society?

The name refers to Shivas Irons who is the golf professional and main character of Michael Murphy's best selling golf novel, Golf in the Kingdom. It is Shivas who teaches Michael about the deeper meanings of golf, his philosophies and methods and inspirations.

Is the Shivas Irons Society a for profit or non-profit organization?

This Shivas Irons Society is a non-profit organization and as such is a registered 501(c)(3) entity. It is through our combined mission of education and spiritual development through the game of golf that the Society was established as a non-profit.

How many members are there?

Currently, we have approximately 300 members. At one time, there were more than 1000. And we hope to exceed that number in the future. The more like-minded people that become members and get involved with the Society, the more we can do in the golfing community to support wonderful causes.
